Gustavo Arellano is the managing editor of the OC Weekly. He is a frequent guest on liberal and conservative southern California radio talks shows where he discusses local and national issues.
He is also the notorious author of the piquant and caustic “¡Ask a Mexican!,” in which he answers any and all questions about America’s spiciest and largest minority. The column has a weekly circulation of over 2 million in 39 newspapers nationwide, won the 2006 and 2008 Association of Alternative Weeklies award for Best Column, and was published in book form by Scribner Press in May 2007.
This past August 2011, ¡Ask a Mexican! the play debuted in New York at The Atlantic Theater Company, the award-winning Off-Broadway outfit co-founded by David Mamet and William H. Macy
Arellano is the recipient of the Los Angeles Press Club’s 2007 President’s Award and an Impacto Award from the National Hispanic Media Coalition. He was recognized by the California Latino Legislative Caucus with a 2008 Spirit Award for his “exceptional vision, creativity, and work ethic.”
Gustavo Arellano has a master’s degree in Latin American studies from UCLA. He lives in Orange County and is the proud son of two Mexican immigrants, one of whom was illegal. He jests with mild indignation, “I also mow lawns for $15 – $10 if I get a water break.”
