Yesterday was a blithe and beautiful day to attend “Party in the Plaza” celebrating 10 years of Faces of Fullerton. The completely free annual event takes place each Spring in the Downtown Plaza as a labor of love to the citizens of Fullerton by Fullerton Collaborative. It is interactive and intergenerational in scope and it brings together every aspect of Fullerton’s community outreach and resources — honoring and recognizing the richness that makes our town a great place to live and work. An estimated 8,000-10,000 visitors flocked to downtown for this one day festival.

Through the tireless efforts of volunteers (some of them student council members from various elementary schools) activities involved rock painting, corn hulling, ribbon and bead bookmark making and special areas of focus on health, education, literacy, enrichment, neighbors meeting neighbors, and local businesses interacting with the community. Our very own boys and girls in blue even got in on the act with their pitching booth, clocking in individual throws with the aid of a radar speed gun.

Generous sponsorship by private and commercial entities provided for free food all day. Feeding the very hungry and appreciative masses, there was a veritable smorgasbord of hot dogs, cotton candy, Lunchables, Capri Sun, spicy tofu and long queues for the popular Korean BBQ tent and the Rubio’s food truck, amongst others.

Family entertainment included stage performances by the CF Dance Academy, Ballet Folklorico and the Fullerton Garage Band. During the middle of the day, a flash mob prominently starring Fullerton Collaborative’s Pam Keller, sprung an upbeat dance number on the unsuspecting, yet delighted crowd.

The Fullerton Collaborative consists of an alliance of local organizations, directors, educators, activists, community service leaders and volunteers dedicated to building and supporting a healthy cohesive Fullerton community. The Collaborative encourages members and the Fullerton community to “think collaboratively.” For more information please contact Pam Keller at (714) 447-2884 or by e-mail at pam_keller@fsd.k12.ca.us.
