‘Mardi Gras in July’ Returns to Fullerton

Feathered masks, beads, wild hats, bright colors and dazzling silent auction items – all of that and more will brighten the night at the 2013 “WTLC Mardi Gras in July,” to be held 6 – 10 p.m., Saturday, July 13 at the Fullerton Museum Center, 301 N. Pomona Avenue. Admission is only $25 per person that includes two drink tickets.

Guests will sip authentic New Orleans Hurricanes and sample fine food dishes including crawfish, creamed corn, sausages and tasty bread pudding from local eateries including Bourbon Street, Cajun Swamp, the Cellar and The Olde Ship. A new participant this year will be JP 23 BBQ & Smokehouse.

Colorfully garbed street performers from the Fullerton High School Circus Club will entertain and amaze with feats of acrobatic skill and dexterity, while lively music courtesy of Bonne Musique Zydeco with authentic Zydeco dancing lessons by “Zydeco Ted.”

Of course, the evening will bring the spirit of Mardi Gras to downtown Fullerton where party-goes will stroll through “Jackson Square” where vendors display their wares in a festive, carnival atmosphere.

Lucky bidders in the silent auction will go home with a guitar signed by the Rolling Stones, a record album autographed by legendary musician B.B. King, or a trip for two to the 2014 Kentucky Derby among other treasures such as “Snoopy as the Red Baron,” drawn and signed by Charles Schultz. Grand door prize is a 42” flat-screen plasma TV.

The epic Pie Eating Contest is back again for it’s third year. Cheer on your favorite contestant in the pie-eating contest that pits men and women alike in a manic, messy race for well-deserved bragging rights!

“Mardi Gras in July is our major fundraiser for the year,” said Leah Song, president of the WTLC board of directors. “We are the only domestic shelter program in Orange County that provides a haven for women and their children, both female and male, who are victims of abuse, substance problems and human trafficking,” she added.

The WTLC  has been serving Orange County for more than 35 years, providing transitional housing and shelter for victims of domestic violence.  This organization aligns itself with community partners including the Anaheim and Fullerton Police Departments, the Fullerton Collaborative, the Anaheim Justice Center and the Richman Community Center. Volunteers believe in this organization and contributed nearly 8,000 hours of service last year. The organization has the only domestic violence shelter program in Orange County that accepts victims of domestic violence with substance abuse, mental illness issues, victims of human trafficking, boys, male victims and re-entry victims being released from the prison system.
